I have always been sceptical about buying used lenses, I have read some real horror stories (and that was about a “reputable” online dealer), therefore I have never bought a used lens.
Having recently traded in some lenses that I could no longer use because I changed to a full frame camera I got thinking about used lenses. I mean, I look after my lenses and take good care of them, and there must be other people out there who do the same. I mean, there is no way everyone mistreats their lenses so there must be some top condition used lenses out there? Whoever ends up with my lenses are going to get some lenses in excellent condition, two of which have barely been used.
In upgrading my camera I now need a new travel lens and a replacement to my Tamron 16 – 300. The obvious replacement is the Tamron 28 – 300, I would of course love the Canon 28 – 300L but at the best part of £2k it is well out of my budget. I was happy with the image quality and size of the 16 – 300 and I assume the full frame compatible 28 – 300 will be just as good.
I have found a used Tamron 28 – 300 for less than a third of the cost of a new one, and the website describes it as “excellent” and a grade 9. If this lens is described it sounds an absolute bargain and too good to be true. The website states that if I bought the lens I could return it within 14 days for a “no quibble refund” and after doing a bit of online reading the retailer gets some positive comments.
Have to say I am in a bit of a quandary since I am going to buy a Tamron 28 – 300 in the future – I don’t need it now because it is going to be my travel lens and I am not going on vacation until next March, so I don’t need one right this minute. If this lens is a good buy the money I save by not buying a new one I can put towards another lens I am planning to buy in the future. Hmmmm….. what to do?
Have any of you got experience with used and second hand lenses? Is it worth a punt?
