What with spare batteries, chargers, spare propellers, propeller spanner, sunshade, the controller and the drone itself there are a lot of bits and pieces owning a drone, and a bag or case is an essential accessory to keep everything in one place and make sure that nothing goes walkabout.
I have bought generic bags and cases in the past and I have to say that most of them were a total waste of time and money. The bags were padded and good quality but the product I bought them for was a poor fit, and would either be a too tight a fit for the compartments or a too loose of a fit and roll around. Because of this I always try and buy cases and/or bags that are specifically designed for the brand and model, which in this case is my Hubsan 501S drone.
An internet search on “protective case for Hubsan 501S” or “carry case for Hubsan 501S” resulted in very few hits, and most of them were from non-UK suppliers/retailers which was not what I really wanted.
I am a huge Amazon fan and tend to buy everything I can from them. The choice is vast, the prices are competitive, their returns service is second to none and they have the best buyer protection. As I am such an avid Amazon customer I decided to head on over to Amazon to see what Hubsan 501S bags and cases were on offer there.
Once again, the range of bags and cases specific for the Hubsan 501S drone was small and after looking at a few of the bags and cases in the search results it soon became evident the majority of these were not suitable. Even though the description said “bag for Hubsan 501S dron/X$/quadcopter” when I actually clicked on the product the bag ended up being a generic photography bag, and what’s more it offered no protection whatsoever. Sure, the bag was padded and it was big enough to fit the Hubsan 501S drone, and all accessories, but there were no separate sections or compartments to hold everything securely. If you use one of these so called “Hubsan 501S carry bags” everything would fall to the bottom of the bag and potentially get damaged when picked up. These bags are, in my experience and opinion, as much use as a chocolate teapot.
You can check out the shopping experience on had on Amazon looking for a bag/case for my Hubsan 501S drone below:-
If you watched the video (and you don’t need to get right to the end) you will be aware that after a lot of faffing around and time wasting I eventually found a suitable case that was fully padded and contained separate compartments/sections designed specifically for the Hubsan 501S drone.
The case wasn’t cheap, but then the Hubsan 501S drone is a bit of an investment and I am more than happy to spend a little extra on a case that will protect my drone and accessories, but also keep everything neat and tidy. I was a little concerned the case had to come from China, and that the estimated date was 1 – 4 weeks but I was prepared to wait for the right product and, in the absence of any other alternatives, this was it.
The bag I ended up buying (you will already know this is if you watched my video) was the Transer ABS waterproof backpack and I have to say that, on first impressions and use, it seems very good. I will do an in depth review of this drone bag once I have owned it for a few weeks and had a chance to put it through its paces.
You can buy the Transer backpack for the Hubsan 501S drone from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and eBay.
