When I bought the DJI Spark I naively thought controlling it using my mobile phone would be fine, and there is no need to spend any more money on accessories that I didn’t need. I openly admit that I got it totally wrong and messed up.
Whilst flying my DJI Spark drone for the first time I instantly realised I had made a huge mistake and that I needed a DJI Spark controller. In my experience if you only buy one accessory for your DJI Spark drone you should buy the DJI controller.
If you have read any of the blurb about the DJI controller and you will know that:-
The above are the primary reasons buy the DJI Spark controller. Okay, the range of 1.2 miles is too much and you should never need to (and legally shouldn’t) send the Spark out that far, but the increase from 100m – 120m using a mobile device and DJI app is very useful, and you will regularly exceed that distance.
The increase in speed to 31mph is too much for aerial photography and footage captured at this sort of speed is going to be ropey at best, but if you just fancy blasting the drone around taking tight corners, making fast ascents, making fast descents etc. you will have a blast with the 31 mph top speed.
In addition to the increase in range and speed there are other reasons why you should use the DJI RC rather than a mobile phone or tablet to fly your DJI Spark, as follows:-
The controller is more comfortable to use. It doesn’t matter how big your mobile device is or how small your hands are, you will get cramp using your mobile device as a controller. The controller is bigger, bulkier and as such is more comfortable to hold and use for extended periods of time.
The controller feels more natural to use. As well as being more comfortable to use, the controller feels more natural to use. Using physical sticks and buttons is more natural, not to mention easier and quicker, than tapping and swiping a flat screen.
The controller is more logical to use. All the buttons and sticks on the controller are close to hand and laid out in a logical way. This means you can make all flight adjustments quickly and efficiently without fuss. You will get used to the controls on the DJI controller in no tie at all.
The Spark appears more responsive to the controller. I find the Spark responds more quickly when I use the controller than when I use my mobile phone. I don’t know for sure, but I think it is because using the sticks and buttons on the controller is more accurate, i.e. fat finger syndrome is not an issue.
Using the DJI controller really does enhance the flying experience, and it is difficult to express in words just how much. The controller is comfortable and logical to use, and making the necessary changes whilst flying is much quicker. Being able to change the speed and/or direction of the DJI Spark is essential to get out of trouble and avoid crashes. Being able to start recording video, change to capturing stills and moving the position of the camera quickly is essential to capture awesome video footage and photos.
The bottom line is the DJI controller is an essential accessory for your DJI Spark, and whilst it may seem expensive, it is worth every penny.
