The 24mm – 70mm zoom lens is a favourite among many photographers for a number of years now, and this doesn’t look like it is going to change in the future. At the 24mm wide end this zoom is ideal for landscapes, seascapes, architecture and group shots as well as other situations requiring a wide angle lens. The 35mm – 50mm focal lengths are great for capturing intimate individual portraits (both people and pets) and at the long end 70mm is a popular focal length for full body shots.
The 24mm – 70mm zoom lens is the workhorse for wedding photographers, fashion photographers, school photographers and corporate photographers (to name just a few) and if you want to get the best portraits you won’t go far wrong with a 24mm – 70mm zoom.
If you are on the lookout for a 24mm – 70mm zoom lens for you Canon camera there are a few choices available, and the good news is there is a 24mm – 70mm zoom lens for all pockets and every budget including:-
CANON EF 24 MM - 70MM F2.8L
Focal Length – Full frame/APS-C:- 24mm - 70mm/ 38.4mm - 112mm / Aperture:- 2.8 - 22/ Min focus:- 15"/ Dimensions:- 3.48" x 4.45"/ Weight:- 28.4 oz/ Image stabilization:- No/ Price (approx.) $USD/£ GBP:- $1,750.00/£1,000.00
The Canon EF 24mm – 70mm f2.8L is an awesome lens and if you want the best 24mm – 70mm lens for your Canon camera that money can buy you need to look no further, although you will have to pay for it.
The build quality of this lens is second to none, and can only be described as bullet proof. The image quality is superb and there is sharpness from the centre all the way to the edges, even when used wide open. There is a good level of contrast and saturation, and distortion, flare/ghosting and pin cushioning are all well controlled.
This lens may not be the largest 24mm – 70mm zoom lens, but it is the heaviest and by quite a margin and this needs to be taken in to consideration. This lens does not have image stabilization (none of the 24mm – 70mm zoom lenses do) and the extra weight of this lens means it is more susceptible to camera shake than other 24mm – 70mm lenses.

TOKINA 24MM – 70 F2.8MM
Focal Length – Full frame/APS-C:- 24mm – 70mm /38.4mm – 112mm/ Aperture:- 2.8 - 22/ Min focus:- 15.0”/ Dimensions:- 3.53” x 4.23”/ Weight:- 25.8oz/ Image stabilization:- No/ Price (approx.) $USD/£ GBP:- $1,300.00/£900.00
The image quality of the Tokina 24mm – 70mm is exceptionally good. At lower resolutions and print sizes the image quality is identical to that of the Canon, however once you start getting in to large prints the difference in quality between the two becomes more noticeable. If you don’t plan on creating very large prints (and I mean very large) the difference in image quality shouldn’t make an iota of difference.
Tokina is well known for building lenses that are tough and durable and their 24mm – 70mm is no different. This lens is exceptionally well made, and rivals the build quality of the Canon 24mm – 70mm without being as heavy. The build quality of the Tokina lens is awesome, and I guarantee you will not be disappointed with the build quality.
The cost of the Tokina 24mm – 70mm is a little less than that of the Canon 24mm – 70mm, although it is still pretty damn expensive. The Canon and the Tokina aren’t too different and the decision on whether to save a few hundred bucks and create smaller prints or spend a few hundred bucks extra and create larger prints, is one only you can make.
Buy the Tokina 24mm – 70mm f2.8 from Amazon.com (US citizens) or buy from Amazon.co.uk (UK citizens)
