More and more brides to be are requesting bridal boudoir photography services and this is definitely a booming area that is starting to become quite lucrative. If you are a wedding photographer and you don’t offer bridal boudoir shots I have to ask the question “why not?” Even if you aren’t a wedding photographer you could still offer pre-wedding bridal boudoir sessions and cash in on this growing market.
There was a time when photographing women in their lingerie, and not just their bridal lingerie was seen as seedy and sleazy unless it was for a catalogue shoot or a top shelf magazine edition. Fortunately, times and attitudes have changed and boudoir photography is far more acceptable and many people are requesting boudoir shoots. Bridal boudoir photography is an area that has grown and many brides to be see a few bridal boudoir shots in the same way they see the marriage ceremony photos, i.e. another wedding photo, and nothing more.
Bridal lingerie is expensive and people are spend a lot of money on underwear that is both sensual and seductive as well as being pretty and flattering. Bridal lingerie is classy and tasteful so why shouldn’t brides show it off? Bridal boudoir shots provide the perfect opportunity for brides to show off their stunning bridal lingerie without having to bare all to the wedding guest. Bridal boudoir shots are classy so make sure you keep it that way. This means getting the bride to pose in a seductive but secretive way (no crotch shots, no open leg shots, no bent over shot and no butt shots) and also using soft lighting to bring out mood. When lighting bridal boudoir shots you should aim to light the areas the bride considers her best features and put what the bride considers her worst features in the shade.
When taking bridal boudoir shots don’t use any props other than what the bride will be wearing on the day. Ask the bride to bring along the lingerie, the wedding dress and also any jewelry she is intending to wear. If the bride won’t be wearing it on the day you don’t need it for the shoot. Since the bride will providing her own props there is no need for you to invest in any boudoir related props for bridal boudoir shots, which is perfect as it minimises costs.
The good thing about bridal boudoir photo shoots is that you don’t need you own studio to do it. If you run a mobile service, and take the shots at the bride’s house you won’t have the costs of running a studio. This means your overheads are lower and you won’t have to build them in to the cost of the bridal boudoir shoot, and allow you to charge less (and still make a profit) than the competition.
As well as taking boudoir photos of the bride you may be able to get even more work by taking boudoir photos of the bride’s mother, the bride’s future mother-in-law, the bridesmaids, the matron of honour and other family members. If you provide mobile boudoir photography services it is surprising how many people will jump on the bandwagon and want some photos taken.
When it comes to boudoir photography, and not just bridal boudoir photography, many people seem a bit lost on how to market the service, and this is perfectly understandable. Photographing partially clothed women in order to get a wedding photo may raise a few eye brows and questions, and there will be people out there who automatically think you are going to use the photos for other purposes. When marketing bridal boudoir photography sessions it is best to keep it low key and not ram it peoples’ faces.
The best way to market bridal boudoir services is to put a few lines on a list of current services. Something like “specialises in bridal boudoir photos before the wedding day or on the morning of the ceremony” is all that is needed. All you need to do is note down what you do and wait for the bride to ask for more information. I have found that verbally stating I offer bridal boudoir shots comes across a bit creepy, and I have been told by some female friends never to mention it, and let the bride ask me. If the bride wants a bridal boudoir session she will ask for it and will not need any pre-empting.
There is a lot of scope in making some good money with bridal boudoir photography, and if you’re not in the game at the moment I recommend you take a look and see if it is something you could do and something you could capitalise on.
