First off, there is nothing wrong with boudoir photography and it is an excellent opportunity for a photographer to earn some money with their camera. Earning money with boudoir photography is easier than trying to earn money selling landscape prints, wildlife prints and other types of photos. The market for boudoir photography is huge, and it seems to be growing day by day, so if you don’t offer boudoir photography shoots it is time to jump on the bandwagon and add them to the list of photography services you offer.
There was a time when photographing women in their underwear was considered sleazy, creepy and immoral. Fortunately, times have changed, attitudes have changed and very few people have a problem with this. Social media is full of people taking selfies of themselves in seductive underwear and lingerie for their partners and significant others to enjoy so why not offer boudoir photography services? At least if you take the photo the model can be sure of a photo that is top quality, well composed, well lit, tasteful and good enough to be printed and framed rather than plastered all over the internet.
The key to successful boudoir photography is to take shots that are sassy, seductive, suggestive and sexy but also tasteful. Boudoir photography shots have no place in top shelf magazines, neither do they have a place on any adult material website. Boudoir photography is appreciating the body, it is photographing it in a way to make the viewer keep staring at the photo wanting to see more and obviously unable to, and it is photographing it in a way to make the viewers imagination run wild. Boudoir shots should be tasteful, classy, something to be proud of, and something you wouldn’t mind showing to your grandmother.
Open leg shots, crotch shots, bending over shots, butt shots and the like have no place in boudoir photography. You should never suggest these type of shots to a model and if a model requests them you need to decline the shoot. There is a saying that “the customer is always right” however there are times when this is isn’t the case and being asked to do full naked and risqué shots is one of those times. Boudoir photography is classy not sleazy, and you should make sure it stays that way.
The most difficult part of getting a boudoir shoot it proving to the model you are not some creepy and sleazy photographer trying to get their kicks by taking pictures of models in their underwear. As a boudoir photographer you are going to have to prove that you are discreet, not going to do anything with the photos after the shoot (i.e. sell them on, post them online etc.) and that the shoot is your day job.
Boudoir photography is just another type of portrait photography, and all the usual skills and techniques apply. That said, when taking boudoir shots you need to be able to put people at ease and make them feel comfortable as the models are likely to feel pretty un-easy being semi naked in front of a stranger. As a boudoir photographer you are also going to have to make sure your lighting skills are top notch since lighting is a key part of boudoir shots since it sets the mood and tone.
If you want another income stream from your photography I highly recommend you think about offering boudoir photography services. It is a growing market, there is a lot of demand out there and it can also be very lucrative.
If you want to get into the world of boudoir photography you may wish to so some reading on the subject, just so you can understand exactly what you are letting yourself in for as well as the skills and techniques you need to brush up on. There are loads of great books on boudoir photography and I highly recommend reading a few of these in the first instance.
