Using the right props for boudoir photography can turn a good photo in to an awesome photo. Props are often considered tacky and naff in many types of photography however this definitely isn’t true when it comes to boudoir photography, and you will find that boudoir photos use props more often than not.
If you want to make it in the world of boudoir photography you are going to need some props period. Using the right props in boudoir photography will help to create the mood and feeling, and can also be used to make the photo sassy, sensual and seductive. A strategically placed prop can make the viewer’s imagination run riot, and want to see more even though it is impossible. Because of this props for boudoir photography are essential.
Okay, we’ve established we need props for boudoir photography but what props should we invest in?
Boudoir photography props should be sensual, sassy, seductive and sexy without being sleazy, dirty and crude. There is a fine line between what is tasteful and what is not, and being the wrong side of the line will see your boudoir photography business go through the floor.
Buying props for boudoir photography is a challenge. Okay, there are certain boudoir photography props that 99% of people won’t find offensive or sleazy. These props include things like high heels, lingerie, lacy underwear, silk nightgowns, feather boas, large fans etc.
The problems arise with the more risqué items and props that one person will find sassy and seductive another person may find crude and sleazy and another person may find offensive. For example, some people have no problem with see through underwear, body stockings and skimpy underwear whereas other people do.
When you take boudoir photos you need to keep everyone happy, so when it comes to suggesting props for your boudoir photography you need to tread carefully.
Simply diving in with the see through body stocking is not a good idea, and doing this is likely to give you a bad reputation and lose you any future work. The best way to approach the subject is to have a discussion with the model beforehand, establish the sort of props they want to include in their boudoir shots and then make suggestions accordingly. As a rule of thumb don’t suggest anything too raunchy and let the model make the decision.
When buying props for boudoir photography I suggest buying items that you can use for several different shoots, such as fur coats, feather boas, oversize silky gowns, feather fans, jewelry and the like. Try and hire items that are size and style specific, such as shoes. When it comes to more intimate clothing, such as underwear and body stockings ask the model to bring their own or if you have to make the purchase include the cost of the item in your fees for the shoot and then give the model the props to take home after the shoot.
Don’t buy intimate clothing off your own back because no-one is going to wear it. Think about it, would you wear second hand and used underwear? I most definitely wouldn’t.
