A table top tripod was the last type of portable tripod I thought I would ever buy and use, however I have to admit that I have “seen the light and had an epiphany”. Whilst I don’t use a table top tripod for much of my photography it is something I always keep in my kit bag, and when I go on vacation and travelling my table top tripod is something I use time and time again.
A table top tripod is a small tripod and very portable tripod, and this makes it perfect as a take anywhere camera support.
It’s strange, because I never thought I would use a table tripod however after using one to take photos on my honeymoon (primarily decent selfies of my wife and I at bars, restaurants etc.)
There’s no doubt about it, a table tripod is great for selfies but it is useful for so much more. Table top tripods are a great tool for food and drink photography. I find international cuisine not only tastes delicious but it also looks delicious and food photos are great stock subjects. I have sold many place mats, greetings cards, note paper, post cards and napkins featuring photos of food and the earnings from these have been pretty impressive. A table top tripod makes food and drink photography quick and easy and composing the shot using a table top tripod is a lot easier, and leads to more pleasing shots, than taking handheld shots.
As well as food and drink photography a table top tripod is also great for beach photos from low down, landscape photos and cityscape photos. Wherever there is a flat and level service the table top tripod will be a useful tool. The table top tripod is a versatile tool and something that all photographers should own.
The table top tripod I use is the Manfrotto mini tripod and it is one I highly recommend. Even though the is small and lightweight it is very strong for its size and is more than capable of securely holding my travel camera and lens set up, even for long exposures. My table tripod has enabled me to capture some awesome, fun and quirky images that I would not have been able to capture if I had to take the photo handheld.
The Manfrotto mini tripod doesn’t come with any type of head, and whilst you can simply screw it in to the bottom of your camera this is not ideal because you are limited on positioning the lens for the
best composition. If you use a Manfrotto table tripod one accessory you simply have to buy is a ball head joint which allows you to set your camera in several different positions and get the best composition for the photo. You don’t have to spend a fortune on a ball head you just have to make sure it is sturdy enough to support the combined weight of your camera and lens set up.
A table top tripod is an excellent bit of photography kit and if you want the option of being able to capture some fun and quirky shots it is definitely a portable tripod you should consider buying.
Whilst I use a Manfrotto table top tripod there are other brands available such as Nonoflex, Konig, and Sirui to name just three. There is one person in the same camera club as me who uses a Joby Gorilla pod as a table top tripod, however the Joby doesn’t quite get low down enough for me.
